BHOPAL'S TOXIC CLOUD:
24 Years Later...
In 2009 during the 24th Anniversary of the Bhopal disaster Bill Ravanesi went to Bhopal, India to shoot a short video on the non-profit Sambhavna Health Clinic. Over the past decades the clinic has offered free treatment to the survivors and their children of the tragic gas explosion.
Back on December 3rd, 1984 the Bhopal pesticide manufacturing plant exploded releasing deadly methyl isocyanate gas at the Union Carbide/Dow Chemical pesticide manufacturing plant. Over 2,300 people died in the following month, and more than 200,000 were injured as the toxic gas cloud wafted over the community. In much the same way that mercury poisoning can affect subsequent generations, methyl isocyanate affected the children of parents who were previously exposed with horrible neurological birth defects.
Ravanesi made the still photographs below over a period of 3 weeks, capturing the Bhopal 24th Anniversary protest in the surrounding neighborhoods.
